Antique Pine Blanket Chest with Fancy Wrought Iron Hardware

Antique Pine Blanket Chest, 48″ wide. A 6 board primitive antique pine blanket chest with fancy wrought iron hardware.

This beautiful trunk is constructed in a traditional 6 board style, with the top, bottom, front, back and ends each made from a single wide plank.
The craftsman who built this chest used rabbet joints to connect the  front and back to the sides.

There is a molded edge on the front and sides of the top as well as a support runner under the overhanging ends.
The front of the chest has a wood base with a very nicely shaped bottom and a molded top edge.

Fancy cutouts decorate the bottom each side.

Hardware:

The chest has very unusual shaped decorative wrought iron hardware. The iron twist rope style handles have beautiful back-plates. All the hardware has embossed designs around the perimeter. One nice element in the strap hinges is the projection that sticks out from the lower straps on the back. Not only are these projections decorative with a nice curl at the top, but these projections support the lid when it is open. Although it appears that the wrought hardware is not be original to the piece, they are all quite unique and probably a very old and expensive upgrade, possibly handmade by the owner of the chest. Some of the wrought head nails that attached the hardware have been replaced with screws.

As can be seen in the photos there is a repair on the back by the left hinge (as viewed from the back). There is also other wear typical for the age of this piece. A hasp that is made to accept a padlock replaces the original key lock.  The small compartment on the left side is missing it’s lid.

The finish appears to be original, and had probably darkened some with age. Overall this is a great looking chest with a wonderful patina.
