This is a beautifully detailed Antique Chinese wedding, opium bed.
This bed is like a small enclosed alcove built on a raised platform. The front has elaborate detailed carvings and gilding around the entrance opening.
Each side of the opening has a panel divided into 5 sections with a rounded corner post on the inside edge. Each sections varies in size and style, but the top 4 have fancy relief carved scenes and designs. The carved panels are adorned with many colors and have mica chips embedded on the surface to reflect light. The bottom panels have hand painted designs done in black ink depicting a vase with flowers with an intricate painted border design.
Between the end panels is a beautiful hand carved header that feature a pair of Phoenix birds, or fenghuang. The fenghuang is often used to decorate antique Chinese wedding beds as they symbolize blissful relations between husband and wife. On each side of the carved panel, under the Phoenix, is another smaller carved bird.
A small carving sits at the top of each end panel that is angles outward. On top of the carved header is a similar angles section divided into 3 panels.
Across the top of this antique Chinese wedding bed are 2 very ornate carved sections that runs the entire length of the front. Each row steps out from the section below it. The lower of the 2 sections rests on 4 carved corbels at the top of the side sections. The top section also rest on corbel on the section below.
Each row in the cornice is divided into 5 panel that have both relief carvings and pierced carvings. The reflective mica chips are also used around the carved panels.
The raised platform of this Chinese antique wedding bed has 2 sections. The main platform is fully assembled and has a separate inset flat section that the mattress rest upon. NOTE: Mattress is not included.
The back wall of the bed is made up of 7 panels. Each panel is divided into 4 sections. The top 2 section are plain flat panels. The small middle section is similar to the small panels in the front, with carvings and mica chips. The larger bottom section is a flat panel with ink painted designs, again similar to the bottom panel on the front.
The sides of the bed are each made up of 3 panels that are divided up in sections like the back panels, however all sections are plain with no carvings or paintings.
The ceiling of the alcove has wood framework that can be covered with wood panels. The panels are included although you may chooses to leave them off for better air circulation.
This bed as shown in the photos has been assembled almost entirely without fasteners, but some screws do make assembly easier.
This antique Chinese wedding bed is functional as well as decorative. It can be used as a sleeping bed or in a more formal room for seating.
This bed is delivered disassembled, but two people (a 3rd person makes it easier) should be able to put it together in about less than 1 hours. (The pieces are marked as far as location).
As can be seen in the photos, there are some age cracks in the wood. While not perfect, it would be extremely difficult to find another bed this beautiful and of this quality. Due to age and storage, the platform is a little loose. We are more than happy to tighten this up with some long screws, however it might tighten up on it’s own once exposed to indoor conditions, so let us know your preference. If we do tighten it up we will cover any hole with wood plugs.
If this bed is to be delivered within a 5 hour drive of Charlotte, NC, you have the option of personal delivery and assembly for an additional $250.00.
If you need to see additional photos or have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
