Pair Antique Mahogany Demilune Tables.

We are happy to offer this beautiful pair of half round Demilune tables. Believed to be of English origin and made in the first half of the 1800’s.

Top Details:

Each table top is mostly made from a single mahogany board that is about 24″ wide and has beautiful striped grain and rich luster. There is a narrow 1″ board on the outside curved edge that completes the full depth of the table. It is possible this narrow piece has been re-attached at some point as you can see in the photos some filled nail holes. The top has a simple flat edge.

Skirt Details:

The skirt that goes around the table is made up with a pine base frame that is veneered with a wonderful figured flame mahogany on the rounded sections. The flat backside has no veneer on the pine. As can be seen in one of the detailed photos a small triangular section of the veneer has been replaced. There is also a very minor lifting of the grain (NOT the full veneer). in one of the skirt sections. If you need to see a close up photo please ask.

Leg Details:

The legs are a typical square tapered straight Hepplewhite style. They are a slightly lighter color mahogany than the top and skirts, and they project slightly beyond the skirt. Just below the skirt, each leg has an inlaid band that is composed of 3 narrow strips. The top and bottom strip are a lighter wood, probably satinwood. The center band is darker, most likely mahogany. The rounded skirt is reinforced where it attaches to the flat back with a solid curved block. As can be seen in the bottom photo one of these blocks has been replaced.

The top hangs over the back frame approx 1″, allowing for the legs to clear the baseboard while the top can stay close to the wall. One of the tops has mortises while the other has several small tenons. This allows to tops to align if you want to use the tables together, but the tables have no means of locking them together.
