Antique Vintage Chinese Black Lacquer painted panel with large Stand.
NOTE: This beautiful piece may be difficult for a lot of people to display due to the large base. The Chinese painted panel could easily be hung on a wall as a piece of artwork or as a very unique headboard. Since it has a different painting on each side, it would also make a wonderful room divider or set into a cutout in a wall between 2 rooms.
This very unusual decorative floor screen is a real conversion piece. When the screen is set into it’s base it stands 93″ Tall.
The screen itself is finished almost entirely in black lacquer. The screen has a heavy outer frame with a molded beaded detail on the inside edges which is accented in red. The center flat panel of the screen has a fine gilded stripe around the perimeter. Since the panel is floating, as in any wood piece there may be some seasonal shrinkage where the panel meets the frame. Both sides of the screen are finished in intricately painted scenes. Each side is different and it is difficult to describe the beautiful detail so it is better to look at the photos. One side does have what appears to be a Chinese poem.
The lacquer has some fine cracking that would be consistent with age.
The base is covered in pierced and relief carvings. The base is reinforced on each side with heavy metal strapping that help support the iron rings on each side. The rings make it easier to lift the very heavy base. The screen slides down into a large dado cut into a vertical support. The top of the support has a carved cap. These side supports are attached to the feet with large mortise and tenon joints (see photo). Depending on ceiling height it may be necessary to lay the base down to insert the screen before standing it up.
We don’t know much of the history of this piece, as it was part of a large inventory of antique Chinese pieces we purchased. We are estimating the age based on the construction, but we are not certain. The construction of the base seems far too heavy to be newer piece. At some point someone added red and gold paint to the black base. If you look close you can see some of the gold on top of the old rusted metal, plus considering the quality of the rest of the piece, the red and gold are totally inconsistent. We did consider removing it but we will leave that option up to the purchaser and we are selling it as is.
Antique Chinese Black Lacquer Floor Screen 93 Inch Tall
Material: Hardwood Base, Most likely elm. The wood on the screen is uncertain, but most likely the frame is elm. The Chinese painted panel itself is also most likely a hardwood. It does have a fine shrinkage crack (as can be seen in photos), but it doe not have near the movement a soft lightweight wood like cedar would have in such a large panel.
Age: 100, Late Qing Dynasty, possibly older
Screen Size: 51″ Wide, 63-1/2″ Tall. 1-1/2″ Thick at the frame.
The base is 57″ wide, 30″ Tall to the bottom of the screen, 49″ Tall to the top of the side supports. The Feet are 33″ Deep.
