Vintage Chinese Pair Ming Style Carved Rosewood Arm Chairs description.
This is a fine pair of Chinese carved hardwood armchairs constructed in the Ming style, each having a square-scrolled leiwen crest rail above a vertical splat, minutely pierced with fretwork carving centering a pierced shou ‘longevity’ roundel. These chairs have graceful shaped arms with volute carved hand rests. The arms are supported by curved carved fretwork consisting of an alternate rectangular form shou symbol. The fretwork is attached to the inset & sunken floating seat framed in an ice-plate edge above carved and shaped seat rails aprons. These aprons are attached to the shaped square legs with compound mitered mortise & tenon joints. The rail aprons are relief carved with leiwen blind-fretwork, repeated on each foot, and a carved pearled edge, continuing along the inside corner of each leg.
These chairs are in very good condition and considering their age there is minimal wear.
