This antique Chinese daybed has a delicate framework to keep the piece as lightweight as possible while being structurally sound. The name daybed is used because in the daytime it could be used as a seating area and at nigh time it could be used as a bed. The weight of the piece allowed it to be moved around easily, unlike some of the much heavier opium beds.
The top is has a simple flat edge that overhangs the legs on all sides. The rattan top has a smooth molding where it meets the frame. The underside of the top has a layer of of a series of woven twine that creates structural support for the rattan. There are also 3 arched wood sections to add further support.
The front legs have unusually shaped feet, while the back legs are straight. The front has a humpback stretcher with 2 vertical supports. The sides and back have straight stretchers with 2 vertical supports each.
This antique Chinese daybed has a warm wood tone on the top, front, and sides. The back is finished in a reddish color.
You can see in the photos that there were several mortises cut into the top on. Originally there wold have been a removable back section and a pillow support at one end.
This piece could be used as a seating piece / bed on a sun-porch or in any other room. it can also be used a coffee table.
