Antique Chinese Sideboard cabinets (55″ and Longer).

Many people use the terms antique Chinese Sideboard cabinets, antique Chinese Buffet Cabinets or Antique Chinese Credenza Cabinets. These terms more closely describe the cabinet’s contemporary uses. Most of the terms can be used interchangeably. Originally these cabinets were storage cabinets, and often they were used for grain.

In the past lot of these pieces would be called a coffer cabinet. Often the term coffer described a storage cabinet that contained some hidden or secret space. This hidden area was sometimes located behind a wide apron. I also may be accessible when a drawer is taken out or by removing a false bottom in the cabinet. Often during restoration additional drawers may be added to the wide apron, so the hidden space is now more functional.

Many of the antique Chinese cabinets can function as a unique vanity. In most cases it is necessary to use a raised vessel sink as these cabinets are rarely deep enough to accommodate all but the smallest drop in sinks. There are some creative ways to make a drop in sinks work, especially if you want to add a stone top to the cabinet. The top can made the necessary depth needed for the drop in sink, and the cabinet can be held away from the wall as need to allow the top to reach the wall.
